ONYX Specialty Processing Launches FPI

Posted May 21, 2025

ONYX Specialty Processing is thrilled to announce that our cutting-edge Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) line is now fully operational at our Decatur, TX facility. This brand-new system, designed with modern controls to maximize efficiency, empowers our qualified personnel to deliver unparalleled quality in aerospace post-processing. As we await the availability of Nadcap auditors to expand our existing Aerospace Quality System (AC7004) certification to include FPI and Pre-Penetrant Etch, we’re proud to showcase the expertise driving this milestone and our commitment to delivering defect-free components in days, not weeks.

Leading this initiative is our Responsible Level 3, Dale Norwood of Norwood NDT Consulting, whose 27 years of experience at Parker Hannifin have honed his expertise in NDT processes. As a respected leader in the field, Dale actively contributes to NDT education groups and speaks at professional conferences, bringing invaluable insight to our operations. His guidance has been instrumental in ensuring our FPI system meets the rigorous standards of the aerospace industry, steering us toward success with precision and innovation. Complementing Dale’s leadership is our Quality Manager, Justin Daniels, a certified Level II FPI inspector with extensive experience at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, and Parker Hannifin. Justin’s expertise in quality systems and FPI processes has been pivotal in developing a streamlined, high-performance inspection line that ensures flawless execution.

Our FPI system is designed to detect surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials using fluorescent dye and UV light, adhering to industry standards like NAS 410 and ASTM specifications. Additionally, we’ve integrated Pre-Penetrant Etch into our scope, a critical process that removes surface contaminants to enhance the accuracy of FPI, ensuring the highest integrity for aerospace components. This comprehensive approach positions ONYX as a trusted partner for manufacturers seeking reliable, efficient post-processing solutions. We’re excited to continue building on our Nadcap-certified foundation and look forward to sharing updates as we achieve full accreditation for our FPI and Pre-Penetrant Etch services.
